George and I and the two dogs Casey and Sammie leaving Kenai today on our journey.
Couldn't ask for a better day for a drive.  Sunny kies and bare pavement practically all the way to Glenallen. Left Kenai 8:30am, arrived in Glenallen around 6pm. We spent the night just outside of Glenallen ina pull out area.  We did stop in Anchorage to pick up some Canadian money.  $635 Canadian for $498 US.
Not much traffic on the road after going through Plamer and Sutton.
Drove 350 miles today.

(Geo) At 12:15 pm Dusty parked the motorhome in the Sears parking lot, disconnected the car and drove downtown to get the Canadian money. I went to Carrs and got candy bars for the trip, stopped at the Alaska corn co. to buy 2 bags of popcorn too.  It is soo good and since we both reallyl like popcorn, i knew it would get eaten fairly soon. Then I took the dogs out for a walk. We left Anchorage at 1:30pm. The roads were dry all the way through the Matsu Valley, and the sun was outandn it was just a beautiful day for the start of our dream trip.  Dusty saw a moose close to Glennallen. Sammie rode in the passenger seat most of the time and Casey wanted to cuddle up where ever I was. There are very few homes out in this vast wilderness, but leterally millions of snow machine tracks. We pased Delchina School out in th emiddle of nowhere. Got into Glaneallen at 5:50pm, got gas and drove out to a pull out area to spend the night. We went to bed around 11:30pm after watching a movie called Dreamcatcher, which was very weird. This is a terrific trip and I am so grateful to God fofr allowing our dreams and plans to become a reality.

(Dusty) Back on the Road at 9am to continue our journey. Overcast for the first part of the day then sunny agains. Saw an adopt a highway sign.. The ones you see that groups voluntgeer to clean that section of the highway.  The sign I saw was the sponsered by the Star Trek club. So if you know of any Trekkies looking for a club, there is one between Glenallen and Tok.
Arrived at the Canadian border customs at 3pm. Woman just asked where we were going, where from and if we had any alcohol, tobacco or firearm and if we had passports or birth certificates, then waved us on through.
Believe the signs that say bumps when you get past the Canadian border. Had to drive 30 to 40 mph in those area's. We arrived at Kluane Wilderness Village at 6:30pm Alaska time, Yukon time is an hour ahead. We were ab le to park in their RV park, only had electric but they  had showers, resturant and we gassed up the motorhome. Took 174 liters at $165 Canadian.
Temp this evening11 above.
Drove 335 miles today.

(Geo) woke up at 5:30pm and had to turn the heat down to 70degrees, as it was burning up in the bedroom.  Went back tgo sleep and Dusty woke me up at 8am looking for his razor and coffee cup. I got up, did my prayers, Dusty had Total an a banana for breakfast and I hady my milk and medications and vitamins.   He had already taken the dogs out for there morning run.  I did my hair and makeup on the move and this was a two lane road and very bumpy.  I think I can probably join the professional bull riders after that. Thatg won't happen again, i can tell you that.  It is so nice having the Lord riding with us, and just looking aroundthe simply tremendous amount of land in Alaska, in fact it is mindboggling.  We are 158 miles from the Canadaand it is 9:30am and we are passing the St. Elias/Wrangell Mountains on the right.  They are beautiful.  Got into Tok at noon, and expresso stands arealready  here now too, and it is just a wide spot in the road We are now on the Alaska Highway and the sun is out and it is another beautiful day.  Dusty and I both said, it just doesnt get any better than this.  Our retirement is good and having our goal and dream of doing this take place is simply terrific. The Tok River is frozen over.  We crossed the Tanana  River at 12:15.  On the river bridge, the semi in front of us barely cleared the overheads on the bridge.  Then we were at titla junction. The mountains here aat their highest peak were 6,441ft. We crossed the Canadian border at 3pm and they didnt even ask to see our  birth certificates or health certificates for the dogs or anything.  In about five minutes after that we went through Beaver Creek, Yukon, the farthest western spot in Canada or yukon Territory. The time changed here also, and is now on pacific time. We crossed Whigte River at 3:50pm. There arent many rest areas or pull  outs on this part of the road. We went through Pine Valley at 5:15pm  I did chapter 12 in the Purpose Driven LIfe and DJ and I watched a movie. He hd to put the engine heater on the motorhome, as it is now -10 and still dropping.  Went to bed about 3am, but DJ went to bed a 1:30am, By the time went to bed temp was down to -15.

(Dusty) 20 below zero this morning with clean sunny skies.  Motorhome electric step froze in the extended position.. Glan I plugged the oiil pan heater int for the MH, it started ok.  Filled the propane tank while here.
We got on the road at 9:45am.
Passed through a place called Destruction Bay, didnt seem like much going on there.Later we arrived at Haines Junction, lookd like more of  a  happening place.   Stopped at the wayside in the 1958 Tahkini iburn area.  Sign says there are Elk and mule deer in the areas, didnt see any.
Arrived back in civilization when we came through Whitehorse.. Few miles out of Whitehorse a van passed us and threw up a rock and chipped the passenger side windsheild. We just get back into civilization and people start throwing rocks at us.  George put a few miles behind the wheel today, she did good..
We pulled into a rest area about 20 miles past Teslin at 6pm and spent the night.
337 miles traveled today.

(Geo) The people at Kluane Wilderness Village told us it was 27 below this am. Dusty had me drive about 45 minutes today to try to get used to driving this big thing. There wasnt much traffic, which helps. Everything in the Yukon and Canada is in killometers. Got into Whitehorse about 2:30 pm. I slept for 4 hours on the couch because I was very tired after only getting 4 hours the night before, but I just wasnt sleepy then. I played my poker game and ate about a dozen cookiesJ

Got into Teslin and there were no motor home places open, so we drove to the next pull out and got there about 6pm. We had Chinese pork and Irish potatoes for dinner, and in spite of the odd combination, it was excellent. Satan attacks me regularly now since I have gotten back into the Bible and studying. I dumped the potatoes all over the oven door when I slid them out to stir them so they would heat up quicker for Dusty. Then I had to spend quite a long time cleaning that all up after dinner. I re-read Chapter 12 in the Purpose Driven life and then read Chapter 13, but will still have to go back through 13 to make my notes. I also read the Bible a lot today while we were moving and that is a nice thing for me. Dustys back is very bad tonight. Our steps finally came clear up again. We watched the movie The Recruit and went to bed about 10:30. It was a beautiful day and is also an absolutely beautiful night out, with the milky way above us and all the stars and planets so bright. God has truly blessed us. It is only 7 degrees tonight. When you look up into the universe and see the stars in the heavens and the beauty God has created, you can not help but be very grateful that He is my heavenly Father and my best Friend. He has been so good to put Dusty in my life because he is such an awesome companion and traveling with him is just a joy. Thank you Father for our congeniality more often than not. I love you so dearly Lord, and truly want to live my life for you and get to know you more intimately.

(Dusty) 10 below zero this morning. Here we are first wild weekend in Canada. On the road at 9am on another sunny day. Stopped off in Watson Lake for a few groceries. Road in much better shape.

We saw buffalo along side the road in a couple of different places. Watched them root with their heads through the snow to get something to eat.

Filled up with gas at Toad River Lodge motorhome took 195 liters at $176 Canadian.

Stopped for the evening 18 miles past Toad River in a pull out area at 5:40 PM

1368 miles traveled since we left Kenai.

346 miles behind us today.

(Geo) Up at 7:30 this am, -12 degrees, but we were warm an comfortable all night long. W got rolling at 9:50. It is another sunny beautiful day. Passed Swan Lake and a sign that read "beware of snowplows coming in YOUR lane"!!!!! That sure was a good feelingJ We entered BC yesterday, but today the road took us back into the Yukon. Crossed Laird River at 11 am. We got into Watson Lake at 11:30 am, where we bought milk and cereal and a few other groceries. The car wash was closed. It it impossible to tell what color the car we are pulling is, it is just one big mud ball. We saw 8 buffalo , then in a couple more minutes we saw 17 more, adults and babies. They dig down with their massive heads through the snow to eat the grass. Some were laying down in the sun and others were standing, they were so docile and we took pics of them. It was about 2.5 miles past Coal River. I drove for an hour an 15 minutes and listened to Jeff Foxworthys CD with Dusty. When I was sleeping those 4 hours earlier Dusty say a coyote . Got gas in Toad River at 5pm, 33 degrees above zero. Beautiful sunny days and lovely country. We found a pull out 18 miles out of Toad River and spent the night there.

2-29-04

(Dusty) 3 above this morning and sunny skies. Generator would not start this morning, couldnt make a pot of coffee, bummer. Only had to drive 30 miles to find a cup of coffee. Stopped in Ft Nelson and picked up some groceries.

George put more miles behind the wheel today.

Pulled into Fort St John at 4pm. Staying at Sourdough Petes RV park.

342 miles behind us today.

(Geo) It was 3 degrees when we woke up at Toad River and we left at 7:40 am. Passed Stone Mountain Provincial Park and a sign that warned us to watch for caribou. We passed Summit Lake and Testa River. Got into Fort Nelson at 10:15 am. Went into the IGA and got groceries. Dusty was out of peanut butter, AWK!!!!!! We arrived at St. John at 3:50 pm. I saw the first McDonalds since leaving Anchorage. There are a lot of businesses here, Safeway, Wendys etc. Oilfield service companies too. We found Sourdough Petes RV park and have full hookups for $21 Canadian. I drove about an hour today and finished Chapter 13 in my notes. It was a long chapter but a good one, and a lot of common sense stuff too. Our enemy was back again today, I opened the cupboard and a whole container of toasted sesame seeds fell out and the lid fell off and they were all over the place. No big deal, I pleaded the blood of Christ and am not responding otherwise. This RV park has laundry and showers, so Dusty and I went down to have our shower. You had to put in Canadian dollar for 5 minutes, and the water never ever got even warm. So, I ran as much hot water into the sink to completely bathe and washed my hair, etc, so I felt vindicated. I also turned their heater on high and washed right in front of it and stayed warm the whole time. Dusty also powerwashed the Saturn today with the garden hose we carry and he flushed out our entire sewer system and we were able to refill our five gallon water containers that were empty or low.

The people in the next space have a 5th wheeler and also a brindle Great Dane, very young and very tall, but not her full weight yet. They also have a Bassett Hound and it reminded me of when I had Arrow and Gusssie. Dusty is watching a movie and I am catching this up, then will go to bed and read on my novel. It is 10 pm;

3-1-04

(Geo) 17 degrees. Took off at 11am.  DJ had to take the starter off the generator, it is broke.Couldn' find one in town so will hope for electrical plug ins until we can fix it. He got up at 5:30am, took dogs out, fixed hiimself some bacon I pre cooked and eggs and toast. He woke me up at 8am and I made the bed did my face and hair, vacuumed and called in our house payment and called the bank to check balances and transfer retirement funds. It is snowing lightly here when i got up, but isnt now. While Dusty is driving i am paying first of the month bills. It is snowing lightly now after leaving St John and lots of traffic today in this area.  Went thru Dawson Creek at 12:30pm. Let the dogs out at Pine Pass pullout and fixed DJ a sandwich. I have been studying my  bible. 2pm Dusty pulled out of  pullout and headed us back towards Alaska. We found a side road where we could get turned around without unhooking the Saturn. We got back going towards Prince George, good job DJ

I drove abount an hour and boy are we in curvy roads.  The bridges are made for two cars barely and i was already most of the way across the way over when this huge semi came roaring by, didnt even slow down. Lord have mercy, but that one scared me.

They drive like a bat our of hell around here anyway, and knowing how I drive, that is saying something!! We saw a lot of those glacial ice things like we have up on Turnagin Arm at home.

They are that turquoise color from the glacial silt and just beautiful and bigger than what we have. We pulled off @ Windy Point and they filled Dustys coffee mug up for free. That was a very nice thing to do.

We got into Prince George @ 6pm. We had called ahead to the South Park RV Park, which is about 4 miles south of the main town. The gentleman said just to pull into space #1, and he would catch up with us in the am. When we got there, he was just leaving for a meeting, and was there to walk ahead of us to show us where to hook up and just a real nice man, about our age. His place is absolutely beautiful. The man and his wife that own it are just so friendly and nice, and they run it completely without any employees, doing all the work themselves. He marked a map of the town for us and for Dusty to get the part for the generator, gave us a coupon for $2 off a meal at Cariboo Steak and Seafood, which was terrific. They spell caribou , cariboo all over Canada and it cracks me up.,

March 2, 2004

(Geo)I did 6 loads of wash today and the laundry room and showers were as clean as any I have ever been in,. Good machines too, Maytags. It costs 2 Loonies ($1 dollar in Canadian and have a loon printed on the back, + 2 quarters to wash and one Loonie and 2 quarters to dry. The sun was out and it was just beautiful. I sat out on the steps a couple of times in the sun and had a cigarette and read my novel. Downstairs from the laundry room are the showers, men on one side and women on the other. They are also spotlessly clean, and all the hot water you can use with no coin operation at all. I finished reading my novel, #1 in a trilogy, and vacuumed, cleaned the bathroom and took a 2 hr. nap. Dusty got the parts he needed and fixed our generator, took the Saturn down to the carwash, got a few groceries we needed, then took me out to dinner at the place the owner recommended. It was wonderful, a real nice salad bar went with the meal, and I had lobster & baked potato, broccoli, cauliflower, plus fruit off of the salad bar for dessert. The lobster tail dinner was only $21.95 here.

We went back to the motor home, went down and showered, Dusty watched cable while I was writing this. We decided to spend another night here in Prince George. It is just a nice relaxed break, sunny and warm, they have spaces for 75 RVs and a 5 acre dog walk, which I took twice today. Once by myself with the dogs and once with Dust. Casey and Sammie loved it. They even had little boxes on a post that said "Dog Poo only", no human garbage.

Wednesday March 3, 2004

(Geo) Got going at 9:30 this am. It was 22 degrees and snowing. We would really recommend this place, South Park RV to anyone traveling with an RV or trailer. They have connections everywhere for just about anything you would need, from repairs to having your nails done, places to eat and visit. They also have propane for sale there and full hookups. We got gas and propane at Williams Lake at 1:10 pm.

We couldnt find another RV park this time, so stayed in a pullout again. Got there at 6 pm. I drove for an hour and ˝ and feel more comfortable each time I drive it. Then I took a 2 hr nap on the sofa.

Had bacon, eggs, and pancakes for supper, and it was great. It is raining and 35 degrees @ 11pm tonight. We watched the movie "Lost in Translation" with Bill Murray, odd, but ok. Dusty went to bed at 11 and made it at midnight, stuck back in the next novel of the trilogy. I sleep like a baby in this bed, never even turn over. We have truly been blessed.

Thursday, March 4, 2004

(Geo) Rollin @ 8:10 am, foggy and 37 degrees. Right away went through Hells Gate Tunnel, then there was Grandmas Tunnel Café, lots of truckers there so figured the food must be good. The tunnel was all lit up & pretty cool. Then we went through Alexandria Tunnel, a longer one. They cut these tunnels straight through rock mountains, and it is such a beautiful place with such gorgeous trees, very unlike the scrub spruce on the Kenai Peninsula. All deep green trees and mountain peaks, a little bit of snow, but not much. The train tracks were at the bottom of the canyon and we could hear them during the night and it was wonderful, especially since we dont have any trains on our end of the Peninsula, an I kind of miss the sounds.

We then came upon a terrible accident, a semi with a load of lumber, double trailers, looked like the cab had turned over, but the trailers merely lost all of their lumber and part of the truck and lumber was on fire. Lots of Mounties, ambulances etc. Really makes you think, there are more trucks on the roads in Canada than I have ever seen in my life, and I imagine they can get complacent or have driven too many miles and get too tired. I prayed for everyone involved, but couldnt tell if any other vehicle was involved or not.

Salve Bar and Saddle Rock Tunnels were next, then Yale tunnel and the small town of Yale, B.C. on the Frasier River. This was a very old historic town and one of the prettiest forests we have seen for awhile. Passed Lake in the Woods, store, gas etc. but a beautiful lake. The Frasier River was quite wide @ Hope, BC. We saw the first Dairy Queen since leaving Soldotna, Ak. And of course there were Subway, Wendys, McDonalds etc. There are tons of A & Ws all over Canada. It reminds me of when I was a teenager an worked at the one in Butte, on roller skates of all things. I made tons of tips and the boys loved to come to the drive in and hit on us girls. Of course, we loved it.

At this point we were on a divided highway, 2 lanes on each side, with a grass meridian strip between and nice wide shoulders. It is much easier to drive this type of road with a wide body RV. Passed through Chilliwack, & saw a place called "Ugly Trucks Unlimited".J

Next came a junk yard called "Pick A Part" with a really cool, cherry pink car on top of the sign.

We entered the good old USA @ Sumas, WA., established in 1891 & got there at 10:25 am. They checked all of our paperwork, picture IDs, birth certificates, Health Certificates for both of the dogs @ the Border, and inquired where we got our dog food, which was Science Diet from our Vet. It is very nice to be back in our own country and see the sign that said, "Welcome to Washington, the Evergreen State". Thank the Lord we made the Alcan without any problems. We went through Lynden, WA., lots of farmland and some of the oldest barns along the side of the road that are literally falling down, rotted out and no one does anything about it. It looks so trashy in that beautiful land.

We stopped at Safeway to get one of my scripts refilled and pick up a few groceries we needed, and some donuts we didnt need, ha. This store was only 2 years old and absolutely the nicest Safeway stores I have ever seen, and so clean and everything so clearly marked. We bought our lunch at the deli and took it out to the RV to eat. Then I took the dogs out for a run, as there was a nice place for them.

Dusty hooked up his GPS and put in where we were going, and it told us the info back, then said press go and start driving. I am so proud of how he has been able to utilize this amazing program on his laptop and in his Bayliner. About 5 miles not to I-5. He found Majestic Mobile Manor and RV park in his Trailer Life book, I called ahead and they said to come on in. This in in Puyallup, where Dustys first cousin Mary and her husband John Williams live. He hasnt seen her for many years. Northern Washington is really quite beautiful, and we really enjoyed seeing Lacey and Olympia when Wendy and Jason were in the service at Fort Lewis a few years ago too. This trip has been so much fun and both of us are so excited about seeing more of our own country, seeing our relatives we have not seen in so many years, and not having to have any type of schedule We got to Majestic RV Park at 4:10 pm and it it was like summer for us, 67 degrees, the sun is out and the flowing plums, cherry, and apple trees were in bloom.

I washed a load of clothes, washed the outside of the windows, and Dusty got our tanks cleaned out, got us hooked up to sewer and now we can have running water since we dont have to worry about it freezing up now. Life is good. We took the dogs out to the dog run here, and had showers, very clean place and lots of hot water. We will spend the night tonight and maybe tomorrow night also, then go down to my son Toms in Tigard, OR. Outside of Portland. Then on to Florence, OR to see Dustys half brother again, and down to California. We will not be able to see my cousin Leonard and his wife Leslie until we are on the way back because they have plans that conflict with the time we got here. I also cooked a turkey breast tonight, so we can have more variety in our meals and for sandwiches. It is 11 pm and Dusty has taken the dogs out for their final jaunt for the night. I love this trip and I love this motor home. Thank you Lord for this special time together, and for our safety.
